Clean Resources Capital (“CRC”) is the first Asia-Pacific public and private investment platform dedicated to the clean technology sector. The CRC team manages four public equity funds and a private equity fund providing comprehensive exposure to Asia-Pacific’s listed and private resource-efficient companies.
CRC’s sole focus is the Asia-Pacific region's rapid structural trend towards greater energy and resource efficiency. This trend is being bolstered by concerns over the localized environmental impact as well as the growing acceptance of the evidence and consequences of climate change. Specific drivers include increasingly aggressive policy support at the local and national level particularly for renewable energy, water and waste management, technological advances that reduce the cost of alternatives to fossil fuels, the "green jobs" agenda and the need to preserve social cohesion, recognition of the consequences of rampant pollution on economic growth and health budgets, and the drive towards greater energy security.
Public Funds – the CRC platform includes two Long-Short funds, Clean Resources Asia which launched on 7 August 2006 and Clean Water Asia on 1 May 2007, and two Long Only funds, Clean Water Asia Long Only and Clean Resources Asia Long Only. Two of the four funds are dedicated to the water/waste management theme. CRC’s public equity funds are typically long biased with short positions in companies suffering excessive energy costs, excessive valuation, failing to execute or incurring significant pollution risks.
Private Equity – the Clean Resources Asia Growth Fund was launched in the fourth quarter of 2009 and will partner with innovative companies in the clean technology sector via the provision of capital for growth and expansion.
CRC employs a research-driven investment process that emphasises "bottom-up" idea generation. CRC currently focuses on five fields: cleaner energy, environmental technology, water and waste management and sustainable agriculture.
- Cleaner energy encompasses natural gas, solar and wind energy, biofuel substitutes, hydro, geothermal, clean coal technology, micro-generation and nuclear energy.
- Environmental technology includes carbon light products, LED, new generation car batteries, fuel cells and sustainable forestry.
- Water is divided into supply, treatment and wastewater. Investable areas include water infrastructure, desalination, irrigation, wastewater treatment, and virtual water.
- Waste management is a high growth area CRC expects to become a major investment area for us as it matures. It is divided into waste-recapture and waste-to-energy.
- Sustainable agriculture is highly correlated to water as over 80% of water in Asia is used in the agriculture sector. Areas of interest include environmentally friendly fertilizers, weed/pest control and water conservation technologies.
